This clip features all the trains caught during a day around Cheyenne and Sherman Hill in Wyoming. All were UP except for one empty frac sand train on BNSF. The morning yielded a few moves, however the UP mainline almost completely died out until early afternoon when a flurry of trains showed up while we were around Harriman. I apparently experienced some camera issues for a couple of trains, so that was disappointing to see the results. Nevertheless, it was a really fun day visiting new places and enjoying the great scenery!

Since 1868, Sherman Hill has challenged the Union Pacific Railroad. Watch as Union Pacific power struggles to move trains over the hill. Vintage photographs take you back to the early history of this tough mainline, and the transition into modern operations. Enjoy steam locomotives 844 and 3985 as they travel this scenic part of the railroad. All three lines over Sherman Hill are extensively covered in this video that was shot over a four year span of time.
Two westbound Union Pacific trains stop at Cheyenne, WY, to change crew. While three engines suffice to pull the intermodal train, it takes seven engines with a combined 30,000 hp to pull the grain train up Sherman Hill to Utah and further to California. The grain train starts at time position 2:38 of the video.

THIS IS IT!!! After nearly a year away from home, the Union Pacific Steam Locomotive Program reached their final day on the road with their special cargo from California: Former Rail Giants exhibit, Big Boy #4014. This final day took them over the rails to which the big boy locomotives made their final stand. That is tough, demanding, Sherman Hill. In this video, the Headin' Home Tour brings the locomotive up to the Laramie depot for a little display time. The train then departs, and heads up track 2 towards the highest point on the Transcontinental Railroad. The rainy weather turns from rain to snow. Once we reach the summit at Sherman, we meet an eastbound double stack. It clears the summit, taking the harsh weather with it. The young rancher who owns the former town sight of Sherman drove up and tried to scare us all off, but after realizing that he was outnumbered about 15 to 1, he pretended to just be joking around, and even decided to chase the train along his property line. Not too soon after, the Headin' Home tour summited Sherman Hill to cameras clicking, whistle blowing, and horns blaring. This yielded a sight not seen in over 50 years. As the train passes, we see the VIP's in the cab, including World-renowned Union Pacific Historian Jim Ehrenberger,. He gives us a salute on the whistle as they top the hill. We then jump back on the highway, where we meet the train around Buford. We continue downgrade, pacing the train through Granite. Cheyenne is coming up soon! This video is brought to you by yours truly, with additional pictures provided by photographer Ken Valdez. In Southeast Wyoming the Laramie Mountains mark the division between the Great Plains and the Rockies. Rising to over 9,500 feet above sea-level, the transition from prairie to mountains is subtle except for the Sherman Granite rock outcroppings which dominate the landscape. Three sets of steel rails twist and wind through this remarkable setting with a history dating back to the First Transcontinental Railroad. This is Union Pacific's legendary route over Sherman Hill. Join 7idea Productions as we take you trackside from Cheyenne to Laramie. Known as the Laramie Sub, this busy portion of Union Pacific's Overland Route is witness to a nearly steady stream of rail traffic heading to destinations in both the eastern and western United States. We will begin in historic Cheyenne Wyoming and head west as long, heavy trains snake their way over the highest point on the Transcontinental Railroad. You'll see trains passing through deep cuts, over high fills and rolling through the legendary Hermosa Tunnel. Witness monster manifests over 2 miles long tackling the grade. This is big time railroading in the Cowboy State as trains travel Over Sherman Hill on Union Pacific's Laramie Subdivision. This program was shot in June of 2013. Welcome to the fourth segment in Union Pacific's Overland Route: America's Original Superhighway, by the Thornapple River Rail Series. In this miniseries, part of our Superhighway specials, we're touring the entire Union Pacific portion of the first Transcontinental Railroad, long known as the Overland Route, nearly a thousand miles of railroad spanning from the Missouri River at Omaha, Nebraska to the Great Salt Lake at Ogden, Utah. An incredible railroad, the original Transcontinental Railroad is today a superhighway of commerce, featuring dozens of freight trains of all types through the American heartland. From the lush framlands of the Midwest to the deserts of Wyoming and Utah, the railroad is as incredible and unique as any other. In this fourth segment, covering the Laramie Subdivision, we begin in Cheyenne, Wyoming, the foot of Sherman Hill, and home of the UP Steam Heritage Program. We'll tour Sherman Hill, the legendary grade to the summit of the Laramie Range. We'll progress through Laramie, and out onto the high plains, filled with horses and cattle. We'll soon approach Rawlins, where the climate becomes exceedingly arid as the line reaches the Continental Divide. If you missed the first three parts, be sure to check it out, plus continue onto the foinal segment, which cover the remainder of the line in a similar fashion from Rawlins to Ogden, Utah.
