Unlike career criminals of other global underworld traditions — such as the Italian Mafia, who often mingle seamlessly in the upper world — the traditional Russian thieves are sworn to never cooperate with any government and never to earn an honest wage. In this scene, in December, 2015, a large gathering of men aligned to two separate groups of Russian vors is cut short by Moscow police backed up by Russian Special Forces. It’s a large-scale Russian version of stop-and-frisk. Police detained 53 men gathering at a country club in a suburb of Moscow, Russia’s capital city. More than half of them had prior convictions. Several of them also bore the tell-tale tattoos of the vors — garish but deeply symbolic ink, usually done in prison, that tells others of their dedication to the thieves’ code and their personal criminal journey. The meeting was to be a sit-down between two groups — over a BMW X6. Apparently a member of one group sold the BMW to a member of the other, without warning him it was stolen. The buyer considered this an insult and sought compensation, if not retaliation. About 30 men from each side came to the meeting. For someone so camera-shy, he’s been caught on video too many times. Let me tell you about it. PLEASE TAP THE "THANKS" BUTTON OR FOR BONUS CONTENT JOIN ME ON PATREON: 🤍 The Mob Reporter here with the story of Ando the Lame, an unlucky fellow who plays an unwitting role in recent changes in how the Russian government takes on its top gangsters. Andranik Harutyunyan, better known as Ando the Lame, had more misfortune than just his unflattering nickname. Back in 2016, he was spotted in a restaurant in Moscow when he shouldn’t have been in Russia at all. He was there at an awkward time: Just as the Russian government was planning a crack down on the underworld elite — the Vory V Zakone. What better way to announce a tough new stance against criminal bosses than to bag one in the capital city and send him on a perp walk. And so they picked up Ando; and he played his role perfectly. This arrest was in March 2016. It was unveiled by Anatoly Yakunin, the head of Moscow’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Chief of the Moscow Police as he publicly declared war on the Vory V Zakone. He warned of a new tactics to hit the top bosses of the Russian underworld — a powerful new law to punish the top bosses, the “criminal authorities” — meaning the Vor V Zakone. The logic goes like this: Cops usually catch the grunts, the soldiers, the lower level crooks that do the hands-on work while the bosses who gave the orders keep the appearance of innocence. They don’t get their hands dirty. And so it is rare to prove serious crimes. Anatoly Yakunin said enough is enough. Announcing a new strategy against the top mob bosses he warned that a change to Russian law was making it a serious crime to just be a boss, even if there isn’t evidence of participating in a specific crime. It was called Article 210.1. And the punishment for «occupying the highest position in the criminal hierarchy», as the law was worded, would be significant. The new law, presented by appointed by Vladimir Putin was quickly passed and one month after the showy arrest of Ando the Lame and Yakunin’s announcement, Article 210.1 became law. But it was harder to handle than Anatoly Yakunin thought. The first major test case was against an alleged vor named Zakhary Kalashov, also known as Shakro Molodoi. He was arrested in grand fashion at his huge and garishly decorated mansion, as seen here. That was in 2016, a few months after the new law was announced. But that case fell apart under strong legal challenge. In 2017, Russian authorities finally hit the mark. Mamuka Chkadua, also known as Mamuka Galsky, was convicted for being a mob boss and sentenced to 17 years. The legal victory was hailed by police as creating a precedence for other cases. But there seemed to be a lot of wrinkles. Luckily, the new law gives police wiggle room. An alleged Vor can be arrested and held in prison without bail for a year and a half while police and prosecutors gathered evidence to build their case. The log jam appears to be breaking. The past couple of weeks has seen Article 210.1 cases chased with new vigour. One case has finally been sent to trial. A rarity. The accused vor was arrested in Russia’s Tomsk region last year. Here is video of the arrest from the Tomsk police. He is accused of being the top underworld criminal authority in the region for the last eight years. In recent days there have been other Vory arrested, sent to trial or declared fugitives in Article 210.1 investigations. In Moscow, a bigger fish may follow. Rashad Ismayilov also faces prosecution for occupying the highest position in the criminal hierarchy, according to Russian reports. He is accused of being the new underworld boss of Moscow itself. If true, then that would be a significant achievement. And a suitable milestone in the new law that Ando the Lame helped usher in. But why not Ando himself? The man who was made the face of the new law? He met an even grimmer fate. And the dreaded cameras were rolling then, too. NEW: JOIN ME ON PATREON: 🤍 One of Russia’s most notorious crime bosses Zakhary Kalashov — better known by the pseudonym Shakro Molodoi or the nickname “Shakro the Young” — was arrested in his luxurious Moscow mansion. Let me tell you about it. On July 12, 2016, a heavily armed Federal Security Service (FSB) squad swooped into his home in Moscow’s elite suburban district of Rublevka and arrested him. At least nine of his men are seen lying on the ground with their hands on their heads as police guns are trained on them. Kalashov is named as a leading member of the vor v zakone, or "thieves-in-law," the pre-eminent criminal organization in Russia’s underworld — equivalent to being a “made man” in the Italian Mafia. Kalashov, 63, was charged with extortion linked to a high-level financial dispute over a restaurant, a Korean eatery named Elements. The dispute got out of hand in December 2015 when a confrontation between armed gangs erupted in gunfire, killing two and injuring eight. Apparently in his kitchen, with a video camera rolling, Kalashov is asked: “Do you consider yourself a thief-in-law?” “I will not talk in front of the camera, are you kidding me? Don’t make a show out of it. Turn off the camera and we’ll talk,” he said. “It’s not a show, we need it,” an officer is heard saying. He later pleaded not guilty in court. The traditional notion of the Thieves is a band of elite criminals formed in the dire, 1930s Soviet era; opposed to the government and declaring themselves outlaws, and vowed to live by the thieves’ code: never to marry, never to have a legitimate job, never to pay taxes, never to own property, never to cooperate or associate with the government or authorities in any way, never to rat on others, never to commit “unworthy” acts. As with all such organizations, it corrupted and devolved over time. Today the vors are largely bloated, crooked gangsters who live in mansions like where Kalashov was arrested. Kalashov’s relaxed reaction to police suggests both his power and his comfort with arrests: He has been arrested several times in different countries. He has been accused of being in charge of the Russian mob’s flows of money through Europe. A court in Spain found him guilty of money laundering and gangsterism and after nine years in prison he was deported to Russia in 2014, against the wishes of Georgia, where he had been sentenced in absentia to 18 years in prison for murder. In Russia he was freed and lived large. He is said to have ascended the ranks of the vory v zakone after the death of Aslan Ûsoyan, known as Grandpa Hassan or Ded Khasan, who was killed in 2013. Ûsoyan was killed by a sniper in central Moscow. His name is also spelled Shakro Molodoy or Шакро Молодого in Russian. After introducing History of Violence (2005) , I thought that we should have a look at another excellent "mafia" movie made by David Cronenberg featuring Viggo Mortensen. In this movie Aragorn joins the dark side - had to made that joke; but not really, as he's actually undercover cop in the Russian mob. This is by far my favorite part of the movie, where he finally get's his stars being promoted to "boss" status. I can't help but to point out again how well "fitted" I find this role of mafia mob I find for Viggo. Shame we didn't see him doing those more. Only De Niro is maybe a "better" face for a mafia role. There is not much action in the movie, but similarly to the previous History of Violence (2005), when there is, it's worth it and "realistic" with a lot of shock factor. But it's not even needed. The story and dialogues are interesting enough to keep you involved. I can highly recommend! Vecer dobry!

Russian organized crime or Russian mafia (Russian: росси́йская ма́фия, tr. rossíyskaya máfiya, IPA: [rɐˈsʲijskəjə ˈmafʲɪjə], Russian: ру́сская ма́фия, tr. rússkaya máfiya, IPA: [ˈruskəjə ˈmafʲɪjə]), otherwise known as Bratva (Russian: братва́, tr. bratvá, IPA: [brɐtˈva], lit. 'brotherhood'), is a collective of various organized crime elements originating in the former Soviet Union. The acronym OPG is Organized Criminal (Prestupnaya in Russian) Group, used to refer to any of the Russian mafia groups, sometimes modified with a specific name, e.g. Orekhovskaya OPG. Sometimes the initialism is translated and OCG is used. Nikolai Akbashev Organized crime in Russia began in the Russian Empires, but it was not until the Soviet era that vory v zakone ("thieves-in-law") emerged as leaders of prison groups in forced labor camps, and their honor code became more defined. With the end of World War II, the death of Joseph Stalin, and the fall of the Soviet Union, more gangs emerged in a flourishing black market, exploiting the unstable governments of the former Republics. Louis Freeh, former director of the FBI, said that the Russian mafia posed the greatest threat to U.S. national security in the mid-1990s. In 2012, there were as many as 6,000 groups,with more than 200 of them having a global reach. Criminals of these various groups are either former prison members, corrupt officials and business leaders, people with ethnic ties, or people from the same region with shared criminal experiences and leaders. clarification needed In December 2009, Timur Lakhonin, the head of the Russian National Central Bureau of Interpol, stated "Certainly, there is crime involving our former compatriots abroad, but there is no data suggesting that an organized structure of criminal groups comprising former Russians exists abroad" while in August 2010, Alain Bauer, a French criminologist, said that it "is one of the best structured criminal organizations in Europe, with a quasi-military operation. The Russian mafia is similar to the Italian Mafia in many ways, the groups' organization and structure follow a similar model. The two groups also share a similar portfolio of criminal activity. The highly publicized Italian Mafia is believed to have inspired early criminal groups in Russia to form Mafia-like organizations, eventually spawning their own version. The Russian mafia, however, differed from the Italians due to their environment. The level of political corruption and arms sales in a post-Soviet Russia allowed for massive expansion and incorporation of many government officials into the crime syndicates. The Russians also dabbled in uranium trading, stolen from the Soviet nuclear program, and human trafficking.[8]
